When Vasanta/spring season (February – March) has come, the king Dasharatha desired to perform the Vedic Ashvamedha ritual. When the King Dasharatha requested the sage to conduct Vedic ritual on his behalf, so that he begets progeny, Sage Rishyasringa directed the king to garner the paraphernalia for ritual and to release ritual horse as a prerogative." Then King Dasharatha ordered Sumantra, to bring the Vedic scholars and ritual conductors like Sages Suyajna, Vaamadeva, Jaabaali, and Kaashyapa, along with the family priest Vashishta, as well as other Vedic Brahmans. And, when they arrived he had disclosed his idea of performing the Horse ritual under the guidance of Sage Rishyasringa. Then Sage Vashishta along with all other sages/scholars have applauded that idea and blessed Dasharatha. The king ordered his ministers to procure the paraphernalia for the ritual and to release the ritual-horse, guarded well by gallant men in its journey and followed by scholars as per tradition. He also ordered to decide the ritual place on the northern banks of Sarayu River and all rituals to commence, as laid down in the scriptures. On completion of one
full year another springtime arrived, and then Dasharatha a determined one to

Keeping Sage Rishyasringa as the supervisor, those eminent Brahmin scholars commenced, Ashvamedha/ Horse Ritual of King Dasaratha on the northern banks of River Sarayu. The ritual went on as per the instructions laid down in the scriptures. Food and clothing were provided abundantly to all the people. Everyone was satisfied with the arrangements made. For the animal sacrifices, the Sages, who conduct the ritual have arranged the animals like horse and other aquatic animals as per scriptures. Three hundred animals are tied to the ritual posts, along with the ritual horse of that King Dasharatha, which horse is gem of horses and verily a best one. For achieving results of ritual, with that horse that firm minded Queen Kausalya resided for one-night, desiring dharma. On completing the ritual thus, King Dasharatha, donated those lands to the officiating priests, called ritwiks. After receiving the lands, the priests gave them back to King Dasaratha with a request to provide them gems, gold, or cows or anything else that is available, equivalent to the value of the lands. The same were provided to them. Thus, the Ashvamedha/
Horse Ritual was completed. |
