Shri Rama queried as to how a female Yakshi, being frail by
nature, got so much of physical power. Sage Vishvamitra replied that a
formidable, childless yaksha named Suketu performed a great ascesis. Pleased
with his ascesis, Brahma gave him a daughter, Tataka. Brahma blessed her with
the strength of a thousand elephants to her.
On her attaining maturity, Suketu gave her in marriage to Jambha's son
Sunda as wife. After sometime Tataka gave birth to an indomitable son named
Mareecha, When Sunda was eliminated by sage Agastya's curse, Tataka wished to
kill that sage along with her son Mareecha. When she rushed towards the sage,
along with her son Mareecha, sage
Agastya firstly cursed Mareecha to become a demon. The infuriated sage Agastya cursed Tataka also divesting her of her
beautiful figure and cursed her to become a man eater monstrous with
distorted form. Angered by the curse Tataka had been vandalising that
auspicious province, in which sage Agastya once moved. After narrating the story, Sage Vishvamitra directed Shri Rama,
being a Kshatriya, to eliminate her, without thinking her as a female,
keeping in view of the welfare of Brahmans and cows. |

On hearing the words of that sage Shri Rama replied that as his
father directed him to follow the orders of the sage, he would eliminate
Tataka. Then, Shri Rama made a thunderous sound of the bowstring making
all the directions to blast. By that sound the inhabitants of Tataka forest
are startled, and even Tataka is stupefied by that sound, and she in anger
rushed towards them. Resorting to magic, she inundated both the princes with highly
torrential stone rain, which was countered with his arrow storm. Then, Shri
Rama mutilated both of her arms with arrows.
Then, resorting to magic, she disappeared and discharged stone storms
upon them. Sage Vishvamitra warned Shri Rama to stop showing compassion
towards her and kill her quickly. When Shri Rama struck an arrow in her chest,
and she dropped dead. Satisfied with Shri Rama’s act in the eradication of Tataka, he
blessed him and they spent that night in that forest, freed from Tataka. |

On the next day morning, the sage Vishvamitra, after purifying
himself and facing eastward, gave the knowledge of hymns related to all the
divine missiles. When sage Vishvamitra recited the hymns, all of those highly
venerable missiles came nigh and stood accessible to Raghava in their astral
form and said that they were ready to accomplish whatever his direction to
them to do. Shri Rama told them to be present whenever he calls them. And,
those deities of missiles have gone away as they have come. Then, Shri Rama requested the sage to impart the knowledge of
withdrawing of those DIVINE missiles too and the sage gladly imparted that
knowledge also to him. Whatever
Shri Rama learnt from the Sage Vishvamitra, later he imparted to Lakshmana. |

Shri Rama asks about the ashrama where Sage Vishvamitra is going
to perform a ritual. Sage Vishvamitra explained
that once Vishnu/ resided in that area and performed outstanding ascesis for
many years. That was the erstwhile hermitage of Vaamana renowned as Accomplished hermitage –
Siddhaashrama - सिद्धाश्रम, and even the sage
Kaashyapa got accomplishment of his ascesis there only. In that ashrama, which was previously under the possession of
Vamana, Sage Vishvamitra had started to live for his devotion to Vaamana. As
demons are causing obstacles, Shri Rama will have to eliminate those demons
with evil pursuit. Then, the great sage Vishvamitra lead Shri Rama together with
Lakshmana to the Siddhaashrama
- सिद्धाश्रम, and entered the
hermitage. On seeing the arrival of Sage Vishvamitra all of the sages of that
Hermitage have welcomed them and have offered hospitality to both of the
princes. After taking rest for a while, Shri Rama asked the Sage Vishvamitra
to commence the ritual, for which he would remain guard to. When he is said
so, sage Vishvamitra undertook the vow of ritual controlling his senses. Both the prices Shri Rama and Lakshmana, on spending that night
got up with the sunrise. On finishing morning time bathing they approached
the sage, armed with their bows and arrows. |

As the Sage Vishvamitra was in the vow of silence, the sages
available there explained that they have to guard the ritual for six nights
and days from that day. The two prices wakefully safeguarded that ritual for six nights
and days. When the sixth day has come, the fire in the Altar of Fire flared
up suddenly and highly, and two demons Maareecha and Subaahu appeared, and
they were about to defile the altar of fire with streams of blood. Shri Rama fitted Maanava astra on his bow, taking aim at
Maareecha and discharged on the chest of Maareecha, which took him a hundred
yojana lengths in full and threw him down into an ocean. Then with Aagneya
astra, Fire-missile, he eliminated the demon Subaahu. On
the completion of ritual, the sage Vishvamitra applauded Shri Rama. |
