After spending that night in Siddhashrama, Shri Rama and
Lakshmana approached Sage Vishvamitra on the next day, and enquired what more
work to be carried out by them. Sage Vishvamitra told him about a celestial bow lying with King
Janaka in Mithila. That great bow was
given to King Janaka (by Varuna) in a vedic ritual. He then suggested to Shri Rama that if can
travel with him, he can see that celestial bow in Mithila. Saying so the sage Vishvamitra started to travel on along with
the group of sages, and along with Rama and Lakshmana, towards the northern
side of River Ganga. Those assemblages of sages on going far on their path
made a camp on the bank of River Sona at the time of sunset. |

Shri Rama along with Lakshmana followed sage Vishvamitra, who is
moving in the Northern direction and finally neared the hall of Vedic ritual
of Janaka in Mithila kingdom. Sage Vishvamitra arranged a camp at an isolated
place that has refreshing water. On hearing arrival of Sage Vishvamitra, king Janaka instantly rushed
and met sage Vishvamitra, keeping his priest Shataananda afore of the team. The king Janaka expressed his gratitude to sage Vishvamitra for
his coming at the time of vedic ritual.
King Janaka then welcomed Shri Rama and Lakshmana also. He excused
himself for that day as the Sun was reaching the Westside and promised to
visit him again on the following day. |

After performing morning time rites in the next morning, king
Janaka invited great souled Vishvamitra, along with the two princes. On extending
suitable formal welcome to Sage Vishvamitra and the Princes, Janaka requested Sage Vishvamitra as to what
type of service he can render to them. Then the sage Vishvamitra said to the king Janaka that Shri Rama
and Lakshmana, two sons of Dasharatha would see that marvellous bow stored in
his place. Then Janaka explained the background of the bow. He also explained as to how he got a baby
girl when he was ploughing the ritual field.
As she is obtained while
consecrating the ritual-field, she is named as Seetha. He added that hers is a non-uterine birth as she surfaced from
the surface of the earth, but fostered as his own soul-born girl and that he
determined to give her in marriage to a bridegroom, who can lift the DIVINE
bow. When Seeta has come of age, the kings, having heard his declaration
that the bounty for Seetha is strength alone, have come and besought for her. All those kings could not lift that bow and
went back in humiliation. Finally, the King Janaka said that if Shri Rama strings the
bowstring of that bow, he would offer his daughter Seeta to Shri Rama. |

On listening to the words of Janaka, Sage Vishvamitra asked the
king Janaka to show the bow to Shri Rama. Then ordered by King Janaka, the
bow was brought by five thousand tall men of great energy with great
difficulty. Then the King Janaka asked the Sage Vishvamitra to allow the
princes to have a look at the bow and to string it. Shri Rama upon the word of the sage rose and grasped the bow at
the middle handgrip playfully grabbed the bow. While many thousands of men
are witnessing Shri Rama had stringed the bow effortlessly and started to
stretch it up to his ear to examine its tautness, but that great bow broke
medially. There occurred an explosive sound when the bow is broken.
Astonished by that great sound caused by the breakage of bow, all the people lost
their consciousness, except for Sage Vishvamitra, king Janaka, and those two Princes,
ie., Shri Rama and Lakshmana. Then king Janaka sought the permission of Sage Vishvamitra to
send his ministers quickly to Ayodhya in chariots, to narrate in detail about
what transpired in Mithila to King Dasaratha and to bring king Dasharatha for
performing the marriage. When Sage Vishvamitra agreed, King Janaka sent his
ministers of Ayodhya. |
